The circus folks at Cirque du Soleil…

Circus for Art in the Schools

…saw my friend, Jeff Raz, in his Circus for the Arts in the Schools t-shirt (created by yours truly). Oleg, “a 20-year circus veteran from Moscow, went on and on about how great it was…,” according to Jeff. “Everyone else had something good to say.”

I’m thrilled that the Cirque du folks liked the t-shirt! I’m also glad that they “get” what Circus for the Arts in the Schools is all about. Started by a group of parent and artist volunteers three years ago, the event raises funds for art programs in Alameda’s public schools. It became so popular that an extra show was added in 2006. Where else could you find world-class circus performers and local luminaries donating their talents under one roof? Circus for the Arts was on its way to becoming a phenom in the Alameda community. Unfortunately, it’s not happening this year.

Jeff’, the event’s tour de force, left town to join the circus–literally. He is cast as Corteo for a year-long tour with Cirque du Soleil. Like many Alamedans, I’m proud to see him in this role; however, I patiently await the return of the Circus. I also hope (not so secretly) that Jeff will entice some of his new Cirque du Soleil pals to perform here. Sure, Alameda’s not a big venue. But the community’s got spirit and a willingness to work hard to bring arts education to all the schools. And if that doesn’t inspire those Cirque du folks, they they should know: Circus for the Arts t-shirts are on reserve just for them! (wink, wink).

Author’s Note: Arts education is a hot topic in the East Bay school scene. By its very nature, the arts serve as a corollary to children’s literature. For more info on the arts movement and philosophy, please visit Art IS Education.

    Edna,
Great to create awareness for arts in the schools. Why oh, why is it always the first thing that they cut? Lovin’ the t-shirt design too:D
